About Jack

A professional gardener for more than 35 years, Jack McKinnon has worked on hundreds of different gardens. He spent 12 years working for Sunset Magazine in their gardens at Menlo Park. In 1999 he established his own consulting business – garden coaching.

Jack & Logan
When Jack begins work on a new garden he always starts with the gardener. He says: "My mission is to teach my clients how to be better gardeners. I comfort the worried, ease the burden of indecision, which often stops us working on the garden, and I lighten the tasks entailed in good horticultural practices."

A deep-rooted interest in philosophy and spirituality, from studies in Aikido and Buddhism, plays a key role in Jack's approach to gardening.

Jack likes to design gardens with a distinctive personality, using elements like plant type, texture and shape to create a theme. He says: "A garden can project a romantic mood or convey the feelings of the Medieval or Renaissance periods through the use of plant color, arrangement of architectural elements and complexity."

Jack is experienced with the challenges of gardening in this area: "Essentially we have a Mediterranean-type climate with elements of both desert and tropical gardens. Selection of the most appropriate plants for this climate is critical."

You can catch Jack's monthly monthly gardening column in the Palo Alto Weekly, Coast Views Magazine and the Mountain View Voice. He makes regular appearances on local television including Real Estate Weekly TV and Mountain View Public TV.

Every year Jack makes numerous presentations on pruning and pest management to Garden Clubs, Rotary and Lion's Clubs. His annual pruning demonstration at the San Francisco Garden show is given to a packed house. He was a board member of the San Mateo Arboretum Society and is a member of the Royal Horticultural Society, California Native Plant Society and Santa Cruz Arboretum.

Jack keeps in touch with his clients by sending out monthly email newsletters with 10 timely gardening tips. You can signup for the newsletter on this site.
